A haunting is a type of paranormal phenomenon. It is either the appearance of a spirit or supernatural being, or the replay of an action or event that took place at a specific location in the past. Below are four common types of hauntings. There are no scientific explanations for hauntings yet but parapsychologists and paranormal investigators continue to look for answers.
A Residual Haunting
A residual haunting (Place Memory) is the most common type of haunting. In most cases, the ghost or spirit does not interact with the people who are witnessing it. This type of sighting is caused by a past traumatic event that happened either at, or near, the location at the time of the persons death. For example, noises without the visual scene may be heard, such as footsteps. Or the apparition will continue to repeat the actions it was doing prior to their death, such as soldiers marching. In this type of haunting, the same scene, or sounds, are repeated over and over again in an unchanging loop. These usually occur at specific times. Residual hauntings, therefore are the records of energy that have been imprinted in the area where the event took place.
They are not in direct communication with the living. In fact, they are quite benign and harmless. You are more likely to observe these hauntings in older buildings, homes, and battlefields. It is a good idea to do some historical research of a location to determine the event that might have caused the haunting.
An Intelligent Haunting
An intelligent haunting is also known as a traditional haunting. It is called “intelligent” due to the fact that the spirit is aware of, and able to interact and communicate with those in the living world. These spirits want to get the attention of the living. They can move or hide objects, send signals, interact with equipment, or even speak to you in order to do so.
There can be many reasons why an intelligent haunting occurs. In many cases, some entities choose to stick around for their loved ones. Some are unaware that they have died because it happened so suddenly. Other times, the spirit may not be visible but you can detect them by feeling a cold spot, experiencing chills and goosebumps, or feeling as if someone is staring at you, as signs. Most of these ghosts are not malicious. In fact, they just want to be noticed and have their message heard.
The word poltergeist means “noisy ghost.” The term comes from the German words “poltern,” which means to make noise, and “geist,” which means ghost. Poltergeist hauntings usually are identified by objects that are moved, hidden, or thrown, disturbing noises, interference with electronic devices, and even physical attacks. Objects have also been known to disappear and reappear. While ghosts can be the culprits for these disturbances, some incidents are believed to be the result of psychokinesis (PK). PK is the power to move objects with the mind, consciously or unconsciously. If PK is the actual cause of the haunting, the living individual is most likely the cause of the moving objects.
This can happen due to a compounding of some overwhelming stress or emotional anger the person is suffering from in their life. Poltergeist hauntings have been associated with young adolescent girls and boys, however, they are not limited to that group. The haunting usually affects a person who is under great duress. However, it can take its toll on the entire household.
Poltergeist hauntings can be playful sometimes, or malicious. When the intent is to be malicious, objects might be placed, or moved, in such a way that could cause harm. These hauntings usually start out slowly but increase in intensity until it reaches its peak. This is when the occurrences can be the most dangerous.
A Demonic Haunting
In demonic hauntings, the main goal of the demon is to break down a person’s free will so that it may take over, or possess the individual. The evil spirit enters a home, or location, with the intent to do harm and destroy all that is good or sacred. The demon can possess not only people, but can also attach itself to objects as well. These types of hauntings, or possessions, may seem benign or non-threatening at first. They may appear similar to poltergeist hauntings because they usually start out with slight disturbances, such as knocking noises, furniture being moved, and so on. However, things get much worse as time goes on.
The demon may appear as a dark shadow in a location, or may first show itself as a benevolent spirit. The demon goes on to reveal itself usually by foul odors, extreme temperature changes, and even physical attacks. They also have the ability to transform, or shape shift, from human to animal. The demon will lay in wait to strike at a time when an individual is weak or vulnerable. It then becomes stronger when it senses fear. During that time a possession can occur.
Some signs of a possession would be that the possessed individual could become fluent in other languages, speak in tongues, has gained knowledge in subjects previously unknown, or lash out and attempt to cause harm to others prior to being affected by the possession. They also become a shell of a person that they once were and likely to become terribly cruel to those they love. This type of haunting is not easily resolved and would require an exorcism. Seek guidance and help from highly trained paranormal investigators, clergymen, and others familiar with demonic hauntings.
Due to the popularization of ghosts, this topic has generated a lot of “buzz.” The field of the paranormal has grown exponentially in recent years. Whether you believe or not, paranormal phenomena co-exists with the physical world. Hopefully more concrete explanations will be revealed and documented.
