“Our feet are planted in the real world, but we dance with angels and ghosts.”~John Cameron Mitchell
Why are we so obsessed with ghosts? As a society, and the human race as a whole, we are often fascinated with many things. It’s the air of mystery and the unknown that peaks our curiosity button. What is it about magic, stories, mythical worlds, and non-human or spiritual beings that excites us as a whole? Is it an escape from boredom? Do we crave fear? Or is it something else?
The paranormal offers both a fascinating, and sometimes controversial, perspective on ones life. It reaches out and touches on a persons mortality and their faith. As a result, we are often left with a desire, and a sense of intrigue, that we simply cannot shake.
Many people are drawn to scary movies, roller coasters, death defying acts, haunted attractions, and hunting spirits. Why? Because it’s a thrill! Adrenaline is an addicting chemical. This is why we tempt the fates with extreme things. We crave thrill seeking adventures, hair-raising amusement park rides, and scary stories. People tend to seek out fear for pleasure.
How does this relate to a fascination with ghosts? The correlation has to do with the unknown. We naturally fear what we don’t understand. Under the umbrella of all things paranormal is an underlying theme of the unknown. As a paranormal investigator, it is the unknown that intrigues me and leaves a lasting desire to want to know more, and discover new things.
The need to know more…
Humans, in general, have always sought to give definition to the world around us. There is a desire to know that there is more to life once the physical body shuts down. In addition, there is a personal and an emotional connection to the past that can provide for a degree of comfort and closure.
We like to believe there is life after death. Most not only want to believe in this, but many also believe humans have had past lives as well. In fact, this is a common belief that spans multiple cultures and religions. This belief gives people comfort when dealing with the loss of a loved one, or when we are faced with our own mortality.
Cultures differ all over the globe. Some are very welcoming and believe in spirits and the supernatural, and require very little convincing. Other cultures, on the other hand, believe this too but feel the spirits should be left alone.
Most Americans never really bought into the nothing idea. It is said that about 70% of Americans believe in some sort of afterlife. Some believe in a spiritual middle ground where you can move freely among the living.
According to different research studies, it appears that about one-fifth of Americans believe they have seen a ghost. Almost half of the population believes that ghosts and spirits are, in fact, very real. Why is that? Because most people who actually experience a type of haunting, or paranormal event, naturally become curious to know more.
The reality is simple. Those who have has these experiences ,that they simply cannot explain, naturally look for answers. Witnessing something mysterious such as apparitions, eerie sounds, sensations, or anything not logically, or scientifically explainable, leaves unanswered questions.
Once you have had these experiences yourself, you’ll be a believer too. I have also seen far too many things to dismiss the fact that there is more out there than meets the eye. These experiences have left me with a very strong belief in the supernatural.
Why do you believe in ghosts or spirits? If you don’t, then what would it take for you to believe? As always drop us a comment with your thoughts and Happy Hunting!
